Now, read these sentences and observe the function of the highlighted clause in each.

The cat played with the red ball which was on the floor.

 

• The apartment that he purchased was very spacious.

 

We notice that the clauses act as adjectives in these sentences. They tell us more about the naughty boy, the red ball and the apartment. The clauses are introduced by relative pronouns like who, which and that.
