WHY DOES MY SON’S RUNNING FLOW SLOW DOWN BEFORE THE FINAL JUMP IN FAST BOWLING? WHAT ARE THE CAUSES, CORRECTIVE DRILLS, AND CHANCES OF IMPROVEMENT?
1. Understanding the Problem
My son is learning fast bowling. His run-up appears smooth, but just before the final jump or bound, his running speed and momentum seem to decrease. This can affect the rhythm, coordination, and momentum of his bowling action.
The final jump in fast bowling is commonly called the bound or delivery-stride transition. It is not simply a high jump. The bowler must transfer smoothly from the run-up into the delivery stride while maintaining balance, rhythm, and forward momentum.
2. Possible Causes of Slowing Down
A. Incorrect Run-up Rhythm: He may be running smoothly at first but losing rhythm as he approaches the crease. His steps may become shorter, irregular, or hesitant.
B. Accelerating Too Early: He may reach his maximum running speed too early and then slow down before the delivery stride because he cannot maintain the rhythm comfortably.
C. An Incorrect Run-up Length: If the run-up is too long for his present ability, he may become tired or lose control before reaching the crease. If it is too short, he may rush the final steps.
D. Uncertainty About the Take-off Point: He may be concentrating too much on the crease, front-foot landing position, or final jump. This conscious control can interrupt his natural running rhythm.
E. Overstriding or Braking: He may take an excessively long step, reach forward with his foot, or place his foot in front of his body in a way that acts like a brake. This can reduce forward momentum.
F. Gathering Too Early: He may begin preparing his body for the delivery stride too early, causing him to slow down before the final bound.
G. Difficulty Coordinating the Arms and Legs: His arm action, knee lift, body position, and foot placement may not be coordinated well enough to maintain a continuous flow.
H. Insufficient Strength or Coordination: Developing leg strength, trunk stability, balance, and movement coordination may be necessary. However, weakness should not be assumed without observing his technique and physical condition.
I. Fear or Lack of Confidence: He may be worried about crossing the crease, landing incorrectly, losing balance, or making a mistake. This can cause unconscious hesitation.
J. Fatigue, Discomfort, or Pain: Tiredness, inadequate recovery, or discomfort in the ankle, knee, hip, or back can also cause slowing down. Pain should never be ignored.
3. How Can the Problem Be Identified?
Before prescribing drills, observe him from the side and behind while he performs several normal run-ups.
Check the following:
Does he slow down gradually, or does he suddenly hesitate?
Does his stride length decrease just before the bound?
Does he look down at the crease or repeatedly check his front-foot landing position?
Does he begin lifting his knees or gathering his body too early?
Does he take a long reaching step before the bound?
Does his running flow improve when he performs the run-up without bowling a ball?
Does the problem appear only when he bowls at full effort, or even during an easy run-up?
If possible, record his run-up and delivery from the side in slow motion. A qualified fast-bowling coach can then identify whether the main issue is rhythm, run-up length, braking, gathering, or the delivery-stride technique.
4. Corrective Drills
Drill 1: Run-up Marking Drill
Mark his normal starting point and the appropriate take-off or delivery-stride reference points under the guidance of his coach.
Ask him to run in naturally towards the crease without bowling. He should aim for consistent steps and a relaxed, continuous rhythm.
Purpose: To reduce uncertainty about the run-up and improve consistency.
Drill 2: Progressive Acceleration Runs
Begin with a comfortable jog, gradually increase the speed, and finish with a controlled, fast run. Initially, he should run through the marked area without performing a delivery jump.
Perform a few repetitions with adequate rest.
Purpose: To learn to increase speed progressively instead of rushing early and braking before the crease.
Drill 3: Six-to-Ten-Step Rhythm Runs
Ask him to begin from a suitable short distance and run through the final six to ten steps with a natural rhythm. Adjust the distance to his age, ability, and normal run-up.
He should not deliberately take bigger steps or force himself to jump higher.
Purpose: To develop consistent stride timing and smooth forward movement.
Drill 4: Run-through Without the Ball
Let him complete his run-up and continue running naturally past the crease without delivering the ball or making an exaggerated jump.
The coach should check whether he can maintain his speed and rhythm through the area where he usually slows down.
Purpose: To determine whether the problem is caused by the run-up itself or by anticipating the bowling action.
Drill 5: Short-Run Bowling
Once the run-through becomes smooth, allow him to bowl from a shorter run-up at comfortable effort, under supervision. Gradually introduce the delivery-stride transition without forcing the bound.
Increase the run-up distance only when the movement remains balanced and coordinated.
Purpose: To connect the run-up to the bowling action without unnecessary tension.
Drill 6: Balance and Landing Control
Practise controlled single-leg balance, basic bodyweight squats, and appropriate single-leg strength exercises with correct technique. A coach or qualified trainer should select exercises suitable for his development.
Purpose: To improve balance and control during the delivery-stride transition.
Drill 7: Arm-Leg Coordination
Practise relaxed running with natural arm movement. The arms should move in coordination with the legs rather than becoming stiff or exaggerated near the crease.
Purpose: To maintain rhythm and prevent unnecessary tension in the final steps.
Important: These drills should be introduced progressively. Do not make him repeat full-speed bowling run-ups excessively or perform repeated maximal jumps to force a correction. Fast bowling places considerable stress on the body, especially in growing players.
5. A Simple Practice Plan
Start with two or three supervised practice sessions per week, depending on his existing cricket schedule, recovery, and coach's advice.
Warm up with easy movement and dynamic mobility.
Perform a few comfortable progressive acceleration runs.
Practise short run-throughs without the ball.
Practise short-run bowling only if the run-up remains smooth and pain-free.
Finish by reviewing the movement on video or discussing it with the coach.
The number of repetitions should remain modest and should be adjusted to his existing bowling workload. Do not add these sessions on top of an already heavy bowling schedule without consulting his coach.
6. Can This Problem Be Rectified?
Yes, in many cases, this problem can be improved considerably. If it is caused by poor rhythm, an unsuitable run-up length, uncertainty about the crease, premature gathering, or inefficient movement, progressive practice and suitable coaching can help.
However, complete correction cannot be guaranteed without observing his action. The cause may differ from one bowler to another, and some bowlers naturally have a more compact delivery-stride transition than others.
The objective is not to make him jump higher or run as fast as possible throughout the entire run-up. The objective is to help him maintain a controlled, progressive approach and transfer smoothly into the delivery stride without unnecessary braking.
7. How Long May Improvement Take?
If the problem is mainly related to rhythm or confidence, an initial improvement may appear after a few well-supervised sessions. Developing a stable, repeatable bowling action can take several weeks or longer.
Progress should be judged by consistent movement, balance, control, and the ability to bowl comfortably—not merely by bowling speed.
If he experiences pain, persistent discomfort, or unusual fatigue, stop the relevant drill and seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional. A qualified fast-bowling coach is the best person to assess his technique.
FINAL CONCLUSION
Your son’s problem is not necessarily permanent. Because his initial run-up appears smooth, the key is to identify exactly what changes in his final steps before the bound. Start by comparing his normal run-through with his bowling run-up. This can help establish whether he is slowing down because of his running rhythm or because he is preparing for the delivery action too early.
With the correct diagnosis, gradual drills, and patient coaching, improvement is certainly possible.
