EXAMPLES OF VERBS NOT FOLLOWED BY 'BY' IN PASSIVES

 

1. The verbs followed by ‘to’ in the passive voice.

1. Marry

Active: Karan married Bipasha.

Passive: Bipasha was married to Karan.

2. Know

Active: Everyone knows her.

Passive: She is known to everyone.

3. Oblige

Active: The teacher obliged me.

Passive: I was obliged to the teacher.

4. Devote

Active: She devoted her life to service.

Passive: Her life was devoted to service.

5. Addict

Active: Drugs addicted him.

Passive: He was addicted to drugs.

 

2. The verbs followed by ‘at’ in the passive voice.

1. Surprise

Active: His behaviour surprised me.

Passive: I was surprised at his behaviour.

2. Shock

Active: The news shocked them.

Passive: They were shocked at the news.

3. Astonish

Active: The magician astonished the crowd.

Passive: The crowd was astonished at the tricks.

4. Alarm

Active: The fire alarmed the villagers.

Passive: The villagers were alarmed at the fire.

5. Amuse

Active: His jokes amused us.

Passive: We were amused at his jokes.

6. Annoy

Active: The noise annoyed the neighbours.

Passive: The neighbours were annoyed at the noise.

7. Disappoint

Active: The result disappointed her.

Passive: She was disappointed at the result.

8. Delight

Active: The news of her promotion delighted her.

Passive: She was delighted at the news of her promotion.

9. Annoy

Active: The students’ noise annoyed the teacher.

Passive: The teacher was annoyed at the students’ noise.

 

10. Vex

Active: Her idle talk vexes me.

Passive: I am vexed at her idle talk.

1. Interest

Active: The story interested them.

Passive: They were interested in the story.

2. Absorb

Active: The book absorbed her.

Passive: She was absorbed in the book.

3. involve

Active: The scandal involved several people.

Passive: Several people were involved in the scandal.

4. Immerse

Active: The work immersed her.

Passive: She was immersed in work.

5. Contain

Active: This book contains one hundred pages.

Passive: One hundred pages are contained in this book.

1. Please

Active: The news pleased her.

Passive: She was pleased with the news.

2. Disgust

Active: The sight disgusted the guests.

Passive: The guests were disgusted with the sight.

3. crowd

Active: Tourists crowded the beach.

Passive: The beach was crowded with tourists.

4. Supply

Active: They supplied the army food.

Passive: The army was supplied with food.

5. Provide

Active: They provided the poor shelter.

Passive: The poor were provided with shelter.

6. Impress

Active: His speech impressed the audience.

7. Delight
