CHILUKURI SANTHAMMA - THE NONAGENARIAN PROFESSOR

CHILUKURI SANTHAMMA - THE NONAGENARIAN PROFESSOR

Who says, to proceed, an unavoidable impediment is, one's advanced age?

Who says, as one grows older one simply succumbs, and down one's arms lays?

Who says, as one nears one's autumn of life, one is too consumed to win the strife?

Who says, extreme senescence squeezes one's vim, enthusiasm and sense?

For, the Professor Chilikuri vehemently defies the above all in her nineties.

An inimitable man moulding machine as fondly called she is,

Commutes daily sixty odd kms to teach Physics, Radiology and Anesthesia

Doing away with her old age infirmity, lethargy, sleep, diseases and inertia!

Her selfless and unconditional love for teaching has made her a rare preceptor,

Her persistent passion for nurturing India's promising future buds to bloom forever,

Her dedication and determination to flow despite Topsy-Turvy like perennial river,

Have made her a memorable role model that ever instils to enlighten and glitter!

Let's all take the nonagenarian Santhamma, Mother of Peace, at her infallible word:

A dauntless fighter defeats death; while death devours a shirker, a shameful coward!

DOORS AND WINDOWS

DOORS AND WINDOWS

Oh! Doors and windows! Without them, our human woes

Would be beggars description!

And their happiness and sorrows

Very similar to ours, and destiny and destination

Are duly fixed and determined much before they are born!

In the palaces, they are treated as the queens and kings,

They are designed and decorated so as to shine like gold rings!

They are embroidered and embellished as the apparels of Tom Ford,

They are taken care of so that they never look pallid, or grow old!

Alas! In the houses of paupers or beggars they suffer worse

Than the plastered legs, propped pegs or patched purses! And curse

Never seems to leave their fettered fates, and they rot and rust and die

More ignobly than a Covid patient or discarded as a rancid corpse;

Lo! Some whine life is bitterer than babul; others extol it heaven high!

A GROVE OF SORROW

 A GROVE OF SORROW

Alas! In a grove of sorrow ever bloom

The faded fateless flowers of jaded gloom;

Where the fragrance of felicity is ever in deep deficit,

Smiles are aliens, while penury and misery ever meet!

Alas! Dreams die here every second,

A perennial river of tears flows with no end!

Adversity is its, unavoidably, a bosom friend,

Before the seeds of saplings sprout, joy is ever drained!

Alas! Koels, parrots or sparrows never visit here to croon

Ah! Throughout the year eagles and vultures with kin inhabit;

Deathly darkness ever rules here even at the brightest noon,

Whatever may be the season, the rainy days are reluctant to quit!

Such is the life that ever runs in a grove of sorrow-

Who can lend it a bit happiness today to be blessed tomorrow?

THE SOLILOQUY OF A WINDOW

THE SOLILOQUY OF A WINDOW

Lo! I am ever a driven and prompted window, like the tied cattle,

Ever operated by man, unaware, when to stand and when to settle!

Lotus and lily are my friends, who’re guided by the Sun and the Moon,

While, deplorably, I’m ever at the disposal of a social beast called ‘man’!

I am a double faced mirror that can view during day and night as well,

I am an offspring of uncertainty; sometimes like an orphan, I’m ill treated,

At other times, like an emperor, I am, with love and adoration, greeted,

Still, I neither droop down like a dry leaf, nor with pride or ego I ever swell!

Like the fragrant flowers I smile, and like dry forlorn leaves I shed tears sour,

As the sandal stems I am kissed here, while the wasps of woes sting me there!

When I am awake like the eyes of god, I bring the lights of happiness and bliss,

When I am shut as the tired eye lids, men slumber without fear and in peace!

As a Saint, I keep telling a sermon to the ever unquenched and unhappy man,

“To be blessed, do your duty with the same sincerity, if it’s dusk or it’s dawn!”
