EDUCATIONAL PASSAGES (1)

Page 224

In India less than 20% people are literate.
One who can only write and read is called literate.
The number of the highly educated people is still less in this country.
So, the prosperity of such a country is like a day dream.
Illiteracy is a curse.
It's an impediment / obstacle in the path to progress of any country.
So, at present the duty of our central government is to spread education.
It will not suffice to open a few schools and colleges here and there.
At first primary education will have to be made free and compulsory, and there needs to open a primary school in each village.
Funds and teachers are both needed for this.
The number of the trained and qualified teachers is very less in our country.
Teachership is not a lucrative business.
So, qualified persons are not attracted to it.
The government and the society are both responsible for this.
Anyway, the government will have to pay special attentions to the spread of this primary education.
Once the primary education spreads, illiteracy will disappear from this country.

Secondary education builds the foundation of university education.
Having completed this education, most students enter into services to earn their livelihood.
Having admitted into engineering and training schools, some gain vocational as well as technical education.
And some others entering into general fields, become teachers, farmers, workers and leaders.
So the importance of this secondary education is more.
But, it is a matter of regret that the secondary education of this country is going from bad to worse from day to day.
Leaving aside a few high schools in the towns, the conditions of most of the schools in the villages are miserable.
The trained and qualified teachers are not available there.
Really, the members of the managing committee don't take any care of the schools.
So the government have to do a lot in this respect.
Unless secondary education improves, the progress and prosperity of this nation is impossible.

Page 227 (3)

Students are the backbones of this country.
They are the future citizens of the country.
They are the future hopes and wealth of the nation.
It is their foremost duty to gain knowledge and build character in their student career.
Those students who gain knowledge giving up comfort and luxury, they become great men in future, and the country and the nation get benefited by them.

But, it's a matter of regret that in most cases there has been a moral degradation of the students of this country.
They don't have a desire to acquire knowledge.
They have no interest to the rules and discipline of the university.
Many students do not pay respect to their own parents as well as the superiors.
Their conduct is not at all satisfactory.
They sometimes resort to strikes in schools over minor reasons.
Seeing all this, it seems as if the our education is heading towards a hell.
Education is meaningless without a sense of discipline.

Page 228 (4)

The present system of education of our country is faulty.
It is a foreign system.
It is too unfit to meet the requirements of a poor and agricultural land like India.
Moreover, it is hostile to the Indian culture and tradition.
In order to run the administration of the English government and produce clerks and officers, Macaulay introduced this system of education.
The sole aim of this system of education is to pass in the examination and get a government job.
At present the body and mind of the educated people of our country are too weak.
Most of the educated people are keen to exploit others by virtue of their University degrees.
They have no power to produce anything for themselves.
Due to the system of our education, they hate physical labour.
Thus, this system of of education needs to be changed.

PASSAGES ON AGRICULTURE AND FARMING

Page 230 (1)

India is a land of agriculture.
Farming supports most of the people of this country.
Indian farmers are hardworking and painstaking.
He labours the whole day long in the sun and rain.
But, without using any modern implements, he sticks to the same primitive ones.
He tills the lands with a wooden plough.
He neither sows improved seeds nor applies manure.
As a result, despite his sweating toils, he reaps a very poor yield.

Now the Department of Agriculture of the government is ready to provide them with improved seeds, manure and tractor.
But, due to ignorance and poverty Indian farmers are not being attracted to it.
In the say way too the Japanese method of cultivation has not been fruitful due to the ignorance, indifference and inactiveness of the farmers.

Page 231 (2)

Rice and wheat is the staple food of the Indians, however more people of India prefer to eat rice to wheat.
India is self- sufficient in respect of food production.

But, still the food production of India has not come to the expectations.
The reasons for this are not far to seek.
Firstly, Is ndian farmers are are ignorant and indifferent.
He does not understand anything about the science of agriculture.
Secondly, his lands are divided into small fragments.
It's not possible to cultivate those fields with the help of tractors, to apply manure as well as to irrigate.
Thirdly, Indian farmers don't have money and means in an advanced /improved method.

Only co-operative farming can bring solutions to these problems.
Countries like Russia and Denmark can have been prosperous for this co-operative farming.
