WHY ARE WE THEN PLANTED ON THE HIGHWAYS?
Alas! We can't ever grow to invite the soothing, reviving rain,
We can't ever sprawl our hands to exhale the life sustaining oxygen,
We can have no shares with the Nature's food chain!
Why are we, for the namesakes only, planted then?
Are we planted to stand still, mutilated and maimed,
Are we cursed to be so frequently and insensitively unstemmed?
Are we born to cry and blare unheeded like the dying, wretched destitutes,
Are we destined to be pitilessly unskinned as gagged sheep in multitudes?
Alas! We are beheaded as the treacherous criminals without any crime,
We are merely registered Numbers to contribute to the lush, green clime!
Ah! We are sorely forced to bleed and play, in vain, our sad pantomime!
Why are we then planted at the cost of public taxes and irreparable Time?
We know it well, none is there to wipe our bitterest and sourest tears:
For, you, the most perfidious beneficiaries are bent on heading for a mass hearse!
