A WOMAN BEGGAR AT A CITY TRAFFIC SIGNAL
A lady beggar with dry, tangled, and unkempt hair,
In an worn out, dusty saree, uncleaned for a year,
With a young fateless baby slung down her poor and starved chest,
From one commuter to another, how eagerly she moves in a haste!
She anxiously stretches her expectant right hand,
With eager eyes to those who pause at a traffic stand!
Some pay a dollar or two out of deep compassion,
Some shrug off, some drop a penny in indignation!
The hurrying, hustling throngs wait for the signal to be green,
Alas! The wretched infant must be asking, "What's my Sin?
Why am I bare and deprived of a cosy swing and care?
Why am I cursed since birth not able to use my flair?"
But, who can change the crying and groping Fate of that beggar lady,
When will wake up this society slumbering, selfish, indolent and greedy?

DeleteProf.Shankar D Mishraji,
ReplyDeleteYour poem titled'A LADY BEGGAR AT A CITY TRAFFIC SIGNAL' is indeed a poem of worth reading which depicts true inhumanistic picture of our society in a stark manner.Begging is indeed a shameful act in a civilized nation. However, most of the begger are victim of circumstances to beg for a handful of alms. You have vividly portrayed the cruel reality of a lady beggar who moves in a traffic signal with her innocent baby for the mercy of pliers, pedestrians to earn her livelihood. She wears dirty torn attire to protect her shame. She is looking feeble with her broken health as well as her little child.Only she knows how much alms she is getting with the mercy of people. Are those enough for her to meet hunger? Is she capable of feeding her offspring? Only she can realise the brunt of pain she is getting. How many people of our society can grasp out her piercing pain? Where is government policy to give her food, shelter, security and education? What will be the future of her son or daughter if not cared, brought up and educated?God,the supreme creator of the universe is also silent like the night sky.To her eyes everywhere is murky. The infinite void sky over her head and uncertainty prevails everywhere.Does she know if she will get a handful of rice the next morning and will be able to breathe with the little, innocent child. What crime the child has committed?Whereas many other child of his or her age living healthy. They are born in wealth-to-do family. They are born with gold's spoon. They are growing happily, heavenly blissfully. But that ill-fated child has to live and grow with untold misery or will be lost untimely for want of a handful of rice. This is the ultimate reality. This is called destiny.
But as the inhabitants of the mother world and being human beings we can't stand still with closed eyes.We must not give up human conscience. We,being the part of this society as well as our government must take some positive, humanitarian step to give beggar like her helping hand.Otherwise,we have no right to claim ourselves as civilized and human beings. For human beings without humanity is just like the ocean without a drop of water. Thanks a lot Prof.Shankar D Mishraji for composing a poem on such a worthy theme. Our society simply needs thoughtful, sympathetic personality like you.
