Summary
The
story begins with the introduction of Timothy, a young tiger cub who was
found by the narrator's grandfather during a hunting expedition in the Terai
Jungle near Dehra. Although Grandfather had gone with a group of hunters,
he was not a professional hunter or shikari. Instead, he was an expert
on the forests of the Siwalik Hills and knew the jungle better than most
people. Because of his knowledge and experience, a group of important hunters
from Delhi requested him to accompany them. His duty was to advise them about
the forest, guide them through the jungle, and decide the direction in which
the beaters should move after a tiger had been located.
The
hunting camp was arranged in a grand and luxurious manner. There were seven
large tents, one for each hunter, along with a separate dining tent and several
tents for the servants. The food served in the camp was excellent and was
prepared in the style of the British rulers of India. Grandfather later
admitted that it was unusual to find such luxurious facilities as hot-water
plates, finger-glasses, and meals consisting of seven or eight courses in the
middle of a jungle. These arrangements reflected the lavish lifestyle of the
Viceroys and the wealthy people of that period.
The
hunting party also had about fifteen elephants. Four of them carried howdahs,
which were special seats fixed on the backs of elephants for the hunters to sit
on safely. The remaining elephants had been specially trained to help in the beat,
a hunting method in which animals are driven out of the forest by beaters
making loud noises so that the hunters could shoot them easily.
In
spite of all the careful planning, expensive arrangements, and large number of
helpers, the hunters failed to find a tiger. They also did not shoot any other
animals, although they saw several deer, peacocks, and wild boars in the
jungle. As time passed, they became disappointed and almost gave up the hope of
finding a tiger. Out of frustration, they even began shooting at jackals, which
shows their impatience and eagerness to kill something before returning home.
Meanwhile,
Grandfather quietly walked away from the rest of the hunting party and strolled
along a forest path. During his walk, he noticed a tiny tiger cub, only about
eighteen inches long, hiding safely among the tangled roots of a large banyan
tree. The cub had probably become separated from its mother and was too young
to defend itself. Feeling sympathy for the helpless animal, Grandfather picked
it up instead of harming it.
When
the hunting expedition ended and the camp was dismantled, Grandfather brought
the tiger cub home. Although the experienced hunters had failed to capture or
kill a single tiger, Grandfather became the only successful member of the
hunting party. However, his success was very different from theirs. Instead of
killing an animal, he rescued a living tiger cub. Thus, he earned the unique
distinction of being the only member of the expedition to have
"bagged" any game—dead or alive. This event marks the
beginning of Timothy's remarkable life in Grandfather's house and prepares the
reader for the interesting adventures that follow.
