ODIA KABITA ବୋଉ / TRANSLATED ENGLISH POEM "MOTHER"

Mother

Mother used to adoringly instill in me day after day

Fondly holding me closely upon her lap, heavenly cozy and gay:

“O the most precious part of my heart! Do remember

Before the day dawns to rise leaving behind your slumber.” (1)

“Let you and Truth never be in life aliens

Let never untruth dare encroach upon your integrity’s fence.

Let you and discrimination never be friends intimate

Let, trust in all mankind, be your life’s goal solemn and ultimate.” (2)

“Let you train your eyes to be vigilant and watchful for good

Lest you should slip while walking across life’s volatile courses.

Let you have, for proper nourishment, equal respect for all types of food

Let you drink pure boiled water to stay healthy warding off evil forces.”  (3)

“Let you ever keep your garments clean and spotless,

Let your home and its surroundings be kept tidy and hygienic.

Let your mercy showers fall upon the poor and the weak
Let you ever nurture devotion to God and have god-fearingness.” (4)

"Let your mission ever be to fill the stomachs of the poor,

And quench the thirst of the thirsty with wholeheartedness.
Let your hands plant so many saplings, and rear with manure
That the Queen Earth may bear the blooms of smile on Her face." (5)

“Let the deprived and the disadvantaged creatures be slaked, dear,

With your generous rains of compassion as well as kindness.

Let none, beneath your protective shield, in hardship shake in fear,

Let you ever be an emblem of Virtue conquering envy and violence” (6)

“Let the helpless, the aged, the diseased and the miserable

Be attended on by your Teresian duty, like a Good Samaritan;

For, hark, dear! Life on earth is as short-lived as a bubble,

None takes anything with him after death; what can you then?” (7)

--- O Mother, know I not why you are today missed so much

Why’ve you travelled mysteriously away past my sight or reach?

Maa, some still keep whispering to me, “You have become a Star

Who inhabits the Lighthouse of the Moon, in a realm afar! (8)

O Mother, where’er you may dwell under Time’s behest

And where’er you may take your ultimate rest after life’s Test,

Let me ever be blessed with your infinite love and affection,

For I’m you’re most coddled son, and you’re my Mother golden. (9)
