Summary

A Tiger in the House – Part III

By Ruskin Bond

About six months after Timothy had been sent to the Lucknow Zoo, Grandfather got an opportunity to visit the city while accompanying Grandmother to meet some relatives. As he deeply loved Timothy, he decided to visit the zoo and see how his pet tiger was doing. The writer could not accompany him, but Grandfather later narrated the entire incident to him.

On reaching the zoo, Grandfather went straight to the cage where Timothy had been kept. There he saw a fully grown tiger with a beautiful striped coat crouching in a corner. Believing it to be Timothy, Grandfather warmly greeted him and fearlessly climbed the railing. He stretched his arm through the bars of the cage and lovingly called out, “Hello, Timothy!”

The tiger quietly came near the bars and allowed Grandfather to hold its head with both hands. Grandfather gently stroked its forehead and tickled its ears. Whenever the tiger growled, Grandfather lightly smacked it across the mouth, just as he had done when Timothy had lived with him. The tiger seemed to enjoy the affection. It licked Grandfather’s hands lovingly and behaved like a familiar pet rather than a wild animal.

Suddenly, a leopard in the neighbouring cage snarled loudly. The tiger at once jumped back in fear and moved to a corner of the cage. Grandfather chased the leopard away by saying “Shoo!” As soon as the leopard became quiet, the tiger returned and again began licking Grandfather’s hands. However, whenever the leopard growled, the tiger became frightened and moved away. This unusual behaviour made the scene even more touching.

Many visitors gathered around the cage to watch the surprising reunion between the man and the tiger. One of the zoo keepers pushed through the crowd and asked Grandfather what he was doing. Grandfather replied proudly that he was talking to Timothy, whom he had presented to the zoo six months earlier. The keeper was amazed because he himself had never been able to touch the tiger, as it was always bad-tempered with everyone else.

Seeing the tiger frightened by the leopard, Grandfather advised the keeper to shift Timothy to another cage where he would not be disturbed. He then decided to meet the Superintendent of the zoo to make the suggestion personally. However, the Superintendent had already left for the day. After walking around the zoo for some time, Grandfather returned to Timothy’s cage to bid him goodbye before leaving.

When Grandfather was once again stroking and patting the tiger, another keeper came and watched him with great concern. This was the keeper who had been working at the zoo when Timothy had first arrived. Grandfather recognised him immediately and repeated his suggestion that Timothy should be moved to another cage away from the troublesome leopard.

The keeper looked surprised and hesitantly informed Grandfather that the tiger inside the cage was not Timothy. At first, Grandfather became annoyed and said that although the tiger no longer belonged to him, the zoo authorities should still consider his advice. Then the keeper gently revealed the shocking truth. Timothy had died of pneumonia two months earlier. The tiger that Grandfather had been fondling was another tiger that had been captured in the hills only a month before. The keeper added that this tiger was extremely dangerous.

Grandfather was completely stunned by the revelation. He realised that he had unknowingly put his life in great danger by touching a fierce wild tiger. Yet the tiger continued licking his hand affectionately, completely calm in his presence. Grandfather slowly and carefully withdrew his hand from the cage, feeling as though every second lasted forever. Looking closely at the tiger's face, he softly whispered, “Goodnight, Timothy.”

Before leaving, Grandfather cast a scornful look at the keeper and walked briskly out of the zoo. The ending is both surprising and humorous. It shows Grandfather’s extraordinary courage, his deep love for animals and the mysterious affection that even a wild tiger showed towards him. At the same time, the story reminds us that wild animals, however affectionate they may sometimes appear, remain unpredictable and should always be treated with caution.
