Summary

Part II of "A Tiger in the House" describes how the tiger cub, Timothy, grows from a playful and lovable pet into a wild animal whose natural instincts gradually become stronger.

After Timothy was brought home, Grandmother named him Timothy. In the beginning, he was very young and weak. The family cook, Mahmoud, fed him milk with a feeding bottle. However, the milk was too rich for the cub, so his diet was changed to raw mutton and cod liver oil. As he grew older, he was also given pigeons and rabbits to eat, which were more suitable for a growing tiger.

To keep Timothy company, Grandfather arranged two companions for him. One was Toto, a mischievous monkey who was bold enough to pull Timothy by the tail and quickly climb the curtains whenever the tiger became angry. The other was a small mongrel puppy that Grandfather had found on the roadside. At first, Timothy was frightened of the puppy and would jump back whenever it came near him. Gradually, he became friendly with it and even allowed the puppy to climb onto his back and rest there. This shows that Timothy was affectionate and playful despite being a wild animal.

Timothy loved playing games with people. One of his favourite games was to stalk someone secretly like a real tiger. When the author came to live with his grandfather, he became Timothy's favourite playmate. The tiger would slowly creep towards him with sparkling eyes and a crouching body. Suddenly, he would leap at the author's feet, roll onto his back, kick happily with his legs, and pretend to bite his ankles. Although Timothy behaved like a dangerous tiger, his actions were full of innocence and affection.

As months passed, Timothy grew rapidly. Soon he became as large as a full-grown retriever dog. Whenever the author took him for a walk, people became frightened and moved away from them. Timothy was very strong and often pulled hard on his chain, making it difficult for the author to control him. Inside the house, Timothy behaved like an important member of the family. He loved resting comfortably on the long sofa in the drawing room and would growl at anyone who tried to remove him. His proud manner made him appear like the real master of the house.

Despite being a tiger, Timothy was extremely clean. He washed his face with his paws just as a cat does. Every night he slept in the cook Mahmoud's quarters and was always happy when Mahmoud let him out in the morning. Seeing the growing tiger, Grandfather jokingly predicted that one day they would find Timothy sitting on Mahmoud's bed while the cook would disappear, leaving only his clothes and shoes behind. Though everyone laughed at the joke, it hinted that Timothy's wild nature might one day become dangerous.

When Timothy reached about six months of age, a great change came over him. His friendly behaviour slowly disappeared, and his natural hunting instincts became stronger. During walks, he often tried to chase cats and pet dogs, especially small Pekinese dogs. At night, the family heard loud cries from the poultry house, and in the morning they found feathers scattered all over the veranda, showing that Timothy had killed chickens. Because of these incidents, the family had to keep him chained more often.

The final warning came when Timothy began secretly stalking Mahmoud around the house with what appeared to be dangerous intentions. Grandfather realised that Timothy was no longer a harmless pet but a growing wild tiger. He understood that keeping such a powerful animal at home would put everyone in danger. Therefore, he made the difficult but wise decision to send Timothy to a zoo.

The nearest zoo was at Lucknow, about two hundred miles away. Grandfather reserved an entire first-class railway compartment because no passenger was willing to travel with a tiger. At the Lucknow Zoo, the authorities gladly accepted Timothy as a gift because he was healthy, well-fed, and comparatively well-trained. Thus, Timothy left the family home and began a new life in the zoo.

This part of the story beautifully shows that love and care can make a wild animal gentle for some time, but its natural instincts can never be completely removed. Grandfather's decision to send Timothy to the zoo reflects both his affection for the tiger and his sense of responsibility towards the safety of the family and the animal itself.
