O THAT I COULD HAVE ATTITUDE AND FORTITUDE!

O THAT I COULD HAVE ATTITUDE AND FORTITUDE!

Unrestrainedly, I can pour money cats and dogs on liquor,
Extravagantly, I can scatter bundles in a Club, Pub or Bar,
Profligately, I can drain off my purse in a Hotel Five Star,
Wastefully, I can dole out on base Gambling and Flesh above par!
Alas! I am too parsimonious to make the day of a starving beggar!

Ostentatiously, I can board a flight where walking hardly needs a second,
Frenziedly, I can borrow from my Conscience, to my irrelevant wants lend,
On vainglorious indulgence, millions of money I can lavishly spend,
I can feed fully the hollow fads and fashions to join a mad, modern trend!
Alas! I am too busy and penurious to attend to sick parents or a needy friend!

I can score, with ease, out of marks in the Tests of Reasoning and Aptitude,
I can, competently, build mansions and edifices at an unreachable altitude,
To pocket vain and petty applause, I am prodigal enough to sell my rectitude!
Alas! For a noble and charitable cause, I always lack attitude and fortitude!

N.B: This is a sonnet of three stanzas. Hope, the scholars of literature may accept and pursue this unconventional style. Thank you.

YES, I AM A DEVIL UNDER THE ROBE OF A WISE SAINT

YES, I AM A DEVIL UNDER THE ROBE OF A WISE SAINT

Oh! A single mistake by an inexcusable imprudence,
Pushes you to a sorrowful gorge deep, deadly and dense!
It unkindly slaps you on the cheeks of your sleeping sense,
Alas! It knocks you down on the uneasy humiliation lanes!

Oh! A little lapse of time by unforgivable carelessness,
Gives you ever no chance to recuperate and redress!
It insufferably raps you against your irrecoverable pace,
Alas! It skittles you out from the invaluable Life’s Race!

Oh! A slight laxity in concentration by unpardonable negligence,
Indescribably deprives you of others’ sweet trust and credence!
It rewards you with an agonizing Charge of rash over-confidence,
Alas! It leaves for you no room for indispensable convalescence!

O God! Let me not deliver only the hollow and spell-binding Sermons,
While I bring up in the hell of my mind innumerable unseen demons,
While I feed on the happiness and smiles of the countless innocent,
Alas! While I foster devilish propensities under the robe of a wise Saint!

LET’S NOT BE WORSE THAN THE CANNIBALS!

LET’S NOT BE WORSE THAN THE CANNIBALS!

Let’s not be worse than the cruelest cannibals,
In spite of being labelled as the most rational animals,
In spite of being called the most sensible beings on Earth,
In spite of knowing best the real purpose of our birth!

Let’s not be devoid of our uniquely gifted Conscience,
Let’s not misuse, for an abominable end, the sweet science,
Let’s not ever flood blood; spread terror, horror and anxiety,
Let’s not disobey the discipline of the Omniscient Almighty!

Let’s not force innocent tears to flow like a perennial river,
Let’s not indulge ourselves in the ugly games of massacre,
Let’s save lives instead of laying them in mass tombs any more,
Let’s not deprive ourselves of being blessed with Moksha Favour!

Let’s not be blind and dark as the devouring and monstrous devils,
Let’s not perpetrate anywhere the menace of ‘Terrorism Evils”,
Let’s not be the heinous Terrorists to torment, kill and torture!
Let’s rather nourish and nurture lives as the benevolent Nature!

Let’s not be worse than the cruelest and the foulest cannibals,
Let’s justify that we are truly the most rational and social animals,
Let’s turn this Planet to a Heaven of harmony and fraternity,
Let’s let the Sun of humanity radiate unceasingly till Eternity!

LET’S ALL BE TRANSPARENT

LET’S ALL BE TRANSPARENT

Listen, with a raft attention! The clear water of transparency
Lets the light of trust reach the bottom of a life-pond’s heart!
Alas! The scum of hiding gives birth to gloomy despondency,
Since it pollutes and profanes the clarity of water with its dirt!

Oh! Transparency is the remedy for all complex solutions,
It, like the sanitizing bleaching powder, ends pollutions!
It builds with ease a durable dome of unshakable relations,
It sweetens the aroma of affable and unyielding emotions!

May transparency prevail in the Elysian edifices of human lives,
May it cement the unshakable bonds of the husbands and wives,
May it strengthen  the filial ties of the parents and children,
May it transform the dull and drab earth into a blissful Heaven!

Thus, before aspiring for transparency, let’s all be transparent,
Lest, we should have to ruefully say later “Sorry”, and repent!

ONLY IF I COULD AFFORD A VIDEO TICKET THEN…….!

ONLY IF I COULD AFFORD A VIDEO TICKET THEN…….!

It was the time of the cassettes and the videos
For the curious eyes’ entertainment;
And listening to the programmes of the radios
For the eager ears’ amusement!

Once, in my childhood, some of my village youths hired a Video Set
So as to provide pleasure to the country folks, and some money to get.
They sold each ticket for a ‘Show’ only a ‘Rupee’ then,
Soon thronged the Video Hall the elated kids, adults and grown up men!

I ran to my widowed Mother with an expectant wish and an anxious look
Said to her, “Bou, Can you pay me a Rupee to buy for a ‘Show’ a ticket?”
“They are running  a movie called Andha Kanoon,
To enjoy myself with others may I have a boon?”

My penniless Mom replied, “No dear, now we cannot afford!
Please, don’t mind, you shall view it when you grow old!
I have to manage a week’s grocery with it,
Else, cannot move an inch our family’s feet!”

I returned silently with a heart withered and heavy,
Still, I controlled myself, and compromised with my wretched Fate!
Told myself, “Only if our circumstances could afford  a Video Ticket,
I would able to view happily the “Andha Kanoon Movie….!

N.B: The Hindi movie “Andha Kanoon”, which literally means “The Blind Justice” , was released in 1983, when I was only 10 years old.

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ME AND MY OLD MOTHER

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ME AND MY OLD MOTHER

Oh! With a bending brow
A wavering waist
Faltering feet
On an unsteady walking stick
Wades thru the airy water daily my Mother slow
Taking no rest
To her morning chores meet
Never letting her self-esteem leak!

I often lose my cool and sensitive temper
I, like inflammable fuel, fume and fire:
“Why don’t you sleep on the bed a little longer
Why do you always wake up,the Sun winks before
Why do you always  think yourself a lady of twenty four
Why don’t you ever take our help and favour
Why do you do at such a fag end so much labour
Why do you always flow ceaselessly as a perennial River?”

She retorts with a low but confident voice:
“Son, let me fight myself, until comes to an end life’s Race
It matters me little even if has slowed down my usual pace
Being dependent is indeed mean, lowly and base
Being at one’s mercy is worse even than death
Let me not be a Parasite until my last breath
Let me not be a seeker of support till I inhale
For, I have to, all alone, the Mundane Everest scale
Let my Virtues be my succor to jump off the worldly hell
Let my honest Duty be my Oar to pass the Pacific and safely sail!”

Glossary:
Fume and fire - get angry
Retorts - replies angrily and quickly

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ‘DAY AND NIGHT’

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ‘DAY AND NIGHT’

Lo! I am the ‘Booned Son’ of the Mother Nature,
Beyond belief is my indescribable Stature!
Lives endure as I lovingly nourish and nurture,
Yes, I do spread happiness, and sprinkle rapture!

I thoroughly comply with you, my dear younger brother:
You are brighter on Earth even than brightness,
I am your elder Sister, darker even than darkness,
You are the diurnal Ambrosia; I am the nocturnal Nectar!

But, you are distinguishable only due to my essential existence!
Ah! Without me! How could creatures have felt the difference?
I am the much needed refresher, energy booster and pain-reliever
Oh! Without me! Lives would have been surely drearier and duller!

Let us, hence, fall out no more over our superiority and inferiority.
Let our respective selfless and inevitable service be the topmost priority!

Glossary:
Endure – continue/last
Diurnal – of the day/related to day
Nocturnal - of the night/ related to night
Fall out – argue/ have a fight

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ‘HAPPINESS AND SORROW’

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ‘HAPPINESS AND SORROW’

Hark! I am the ‘Darling Babe’ of one and all,
People pray to God for my rise, and your fall!
God is devoutly beseeched for your departure and my arrival,
For, your presence fetches a desert, and mine fans breeze Vernal!

Yes, I am, like the useful and bounteous Neem leaves, bitter
I am not at all a hateful Curse, as you mistake, altogether!
Lo! I do always teach people essential lessons more,
Whereas you open their misleading Overconfidence-door!

Hush! I am the very preferred destination of every living soul,
Behind every aspiring endeavour, I am the only goal!
I am praised, pampered and hugged by the whole world,
Undeniably, I am, of the most precious metals, the prettiest Gold!

However, my role is not so negligible as you deem,
I am the ‘Vital Brake’ to make man humble, disciplined and trim!
I am not so much unwanted as I do outwardly seem,
I am the stern Teacher to nourish man’s dream to shine and gleam!

Let us, from today, live harmoniously as the two sides of the same coin,
For, both of us are valued equally by the scrupulous, judicious and sane!

Glossary:
Devoutly  - sincerely
Beseeched - begged
Fetches – brings
Vernal – related to the Spring season

CONFESSION

CONFESSION

Confession appears too suffocating at first:
As if a piece of bone were stuck in one’s dying throat,
As if one inhaled a cloud of breath-choking soot or dust,
As if one were, like a fish without water, not at ease, a lot!

Confession, indeed, relieves a burdened soul and a repentant mind:
As a pregnant lady after a pain-stricken delivery, does a great reprieve find,
As an unpardonable culprit unloads a mountain off his heavy head,
As a starving mouth gladly comes upon after ages a crumb of tasty bread!

Confession cleanses the rotting stains and the uneasy pains inside,
It blesses one’s sore heart to live a life of peace, comfort and pride,
It leads one to transparency and light; teaches nothing ever to  hide,
It wakes one’s sleeping Conscience, and takes one for a Blissful ride!

Let Confession, O my God! be my life’s sole and noblest Mission,
Lest I should surely miss the flight to a Heavenly Realm of Salvation!

Glossary:
 At ease – relaxed/ comfortable
Reprieve – pardon/relief
Unpardonable – inexcusable
Blissful – delightful/ wonderful
Lest - in case/ for fear that
Realm - kingdom

AN HONEST CONFESSION OF A DISHONEST PERSON

AN HONEST CONFESSION OF A DISHONEST PERSON

O God! I am ever too idly busy to think of You,
I am ever too penny-pinching to offer a pittance for You,
Oh! I am ever too tall to bow and kneel before You,
Alas! The lenses of my eyes are too thick to perceive You!

O God! My memory is too full of idle stuffs to recall Your Name,
Oh! Submission for my too big a stature is a matter of sheer shame!
I do arrogantly proclaim, on my own merit and skill, I win every game,
For my every defeat, I do meanly shout and denounce, You are to blame!

O God! I am ever too hungry to follow Your magnanimous Generosity,
I am ever too elderly and dignified to accomplish ever my allotted Duty,
I am ever too thirsty to be ever quenched by Your indigestible Sermon water
Oh! I am ever too wealthy and well-heeled to accept You as my Benefactor!

O God! Aren’t I too unique and queer a species in Your great Creation?
Who else does then deserve better and faster than I the sweet Salvation?

DO REMEMBER!

DO REMEMBER!

Do remember, the dark and dense clouds of Inconvenience
Can’t forever eclipse the shining Sun of eternal Happiness!
The temporary and boisterous Tides of bitter Adversity,
Are never enduring, for they are only the Agents of Fragility!

Do remember, the fierce and fleeting Tempests of  life
Can neither forever batter the serene shores of life,
Nor they can elude Victory from your sorrow-soaked life
Nor they can snatch your last laugh in its stiff strife!

Do remember, the Vice can’t always reign till the very end,
One has to pay with due interests for the hoards by foul means gained!
The Just and the Righteous can’t be gagged under force forever,
For, when sets in the Spring of Good-luck, flees the Cold-luck's shiver!

Do remember, Truth always triumphs the long and tough Marathon of life,
Time blunts timely the short-lived and useless sharpness of Untruth Knife!
Honest sweats are ever blessed and accompanied by the lasting sweet Smiles,
The ecstasy of walking on foot excels the joy of flying by Jets a million miles!

Do remember, my dear, Faith conquers the most inaccessible mountain,
Industry, under all circumstances,  never  ends in smoke, nor goes in vain!
If you can remember all these infallible harsh Realities of life without fail,
The Celestial Bliss is yours; and the Heaven awaits to hug you and hail!

DO FORGET!

DO FORGET!

Forget, my dear, that you had ever been an indomitable Winner;
Lest the ever susceptible Complacency should creep into you!
Forget, my dear, that you had ever been an embarrassed Loser;
Lest the ever depressing Despondency should spur you to rue!

Forget, my dear, that you had ever been an Antonio-like Creditor;

Forget, my dear, that you had ever been an impoverished Debtor;
Lest your Self-esteem should hurt your zeal and press you lower!

Forget, my dear, that you had ever been a shining and inimitable Scholar;
Lest Over-confidence should turn you a dullard and fetch you Failure!
Forget, my dear, that you had ever been an immature and diplomatic Fool;

DO TRUST!

DO TRUST!

A very humble and ordinary Hut becomes an extraordinary Heaven,
When It is built with efforts an Abode of Peace and a Love’s Haven!
A poor and famished Family becomes a rich and rapturous Paradise,
Where the Sun of Mutual Trust and the Moon of Tranquility rise!

A very commonplace and eventless Life becomes a long, euphoric Epic,
When It ennobles others’ lives and makes them Sanguine and Optimistic!
An unseasoned and unsavoury Dish becomes delicious and Nectaric,
When It is served with Love and relished with Contentment Angelic!

A sad, dead and bygone Past becomes Life-like and Living,
When It makes the Present a blithe and sprightly Spring!
A lost and embarrassing Fight becomes a benefic Boon,
When It turns Itself the Plinth for all the Victories ensuing!

Should the Above be hugged, embraced and practised with whole-heartedness
Do trust! God shall ever be at your disposal to bless you and grant all your Wishes!

PLEASE LEAVE ME NOT........

PLEASE LEAVE ME NOT........

Please, leave me never in staggering, crippling  and shy shivers
Alienate me never as the hollow husks are blown away by farmers
As the boats abandon and forget the dry, withered and sandy rivers
As the crows’ nests are deceitfully left by the young cuckoos’ mothers!

Please, leave me never like an innocent, wretched infant, illegitimate
As a hungry man, after being fully fed, leaves ungratefully his empty plate
As the shells of grains are scattered after the kernels are eagerly extracted
As the boisterous stadiums are deserted forlornly after matches are played!

Please, leave me never like the poor, pitiable and hideous snake-slough
Please evaporate me never like exhaustion, disgustion and indignation puff
Please comb me never off like the filthy, irritating and obstinate dandruff
Please dump me never like unhygeinic, unwanted and left over dustbin stuff!

Please, leave me never, nor treat me like an unnecessary and used copy rough
Please deem me never ‘Good for nothing’ or redundant like a slice of stale loaf
For, you have been, in your ignorance, my very heartbeat and my life’s breath
Do trust. Without you I would gladly prefer to kiss, cuddle and clasp “Death!”

A CHILDREN DAY’S WISH

A CHILDREN DAY’S WISH

O the curled and budding buds of the imminent future!
Get ready to come out of the promising and gravid stems,
Await the nourishing Rays of the Enlightenment Sun,
Until you become the Earth Tree’s rich, dazzling diadems!

Don’t ever get dampened; never let doldrums be your King
On the face of the trying trials of the adverse climate!
They are the necessary encumbrances for your wellbeing
To enable you to swing like pedant Apples early or late!

Never look forward to being sweet, delicious and nutritious
Sine hugging heat, rain and cold-the inevitable needs obvious!
All those fruits which hang gleefully now, you will behold then,
Had undergone the passages of harsh hardship and acute pain!

Believe  you may or not, dear kids, this is the only SUCCESS secret
All those who abide by this become, in the long run, uniquely great!

Gravid – fit to bear fruit

LET ME ABSORB AND DRY ALL THE SOUREST AND BITTEREST TEARS!

LET ME ABSORB AND DRY ALL THE SOUREST AND BITTEREST TEARS!

Ouch! Every drop of costliest tearing tear if ever one does shed,
Never does it go, my sensible friend, unpaid;
For, those sorts of forced, suppressed  and hapless tears are red,
Thus, they are never uselessly and in vain bled!

Hark! Nothing ever escapes God’s unblinking and unbiased Eyes!
The guilty and the innocent, the foolish and the wise,
Are ever aptly sent their respective either hellish or heavenly prize
In proportion to their vicious or virtuous actions’ size!

O God! Let me never be an unwanted cause for anyone’s tears
Let none have for me trepidations or spine shivering fears
Let me seek, at the cost of happiness, what every malady cures
Let me embrace gladly what my entry for Heaven ensures!

O God! Thus, let me absorb and dry all the sourest and bitterest tears!
In return for Salvation, I can lick all unjust charges and digest all complaints!

Malady – trouble/disease
Trepidations – fears/anxietries

OH! MY HARROWING, WOLVISH AND ENDLESS HUNGER!

OH! MY HARROWING, WOLVISH AND ENDLESS HUNGER!

Yes, I munch and devour at dawn, at noon and at night,
Oh! Yet my stomach is ever loose and empty, never tight!
Alas! I am ever too Hungry to be ever placated and satisfied,
Notwithstanding, how often, how long and how much I am fed!

Yes, I bite and gulp in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening,
The less my wolvish Hunger is satiated, the more gluttonously I sting!
Oh! Foods are shrunk at and scared of me, the unbeatably Hunger King
Alas! Wherever falls my greedy gaze, it does ever only Hunger song sing!

Oh! I never fall an easy prey to the Conscientious indigestion,
I am never pricked and pinched an iota by Scruple’s compunction,
I am ever feeble and emaciated, never a victim of detachment obesity
Even if I never do exercises of maintaining restraints, or doing charity!

What else can I brashly enlighten you about me, and my brazen Hunger?
The more I voraciously guzzle, stretches endlessly longer my tongue of Hunger!

Glossary:
Harrowing – disturbing/ distressing
Wolvish – hungry like a wolf
Devour - eat greedily

THE SOLE ROLE OF EDUCATION

THE SOLE ROLE OF EDUCATION

In the alluvial fields of minds, the seeds of Education are timely sown,
Under the tender, loving cares of the Teacher-gardeners, they are grown,
Like the lush and verdant plants of cultured refinement and perfection,
To feed, at length, the world with their nutritious fruit of Emancipation!

Education is the fertility for the foetus of the human mind,
That fortifies it to conceive of good thoughts and sublime ideas,
That ultimately gives birth to a species of a unique kind,
That frees man from savagery, superstition, rawness and bias!

Education aims at physical as well as psychological evolution:
It leads to much relieving enlightenment and economic liberation,
It encourages social justice, indiscrimination and judicious decision,
It finds for every tough riddle a prompt, foolproof and sweet solution!

Education is the powerful weapon to defeat the ignorance rival:
It brings forth a fullfledged transformation;  ushers in a moral revival,
It blesses the impoverished society with seas of useful knowledge
It turns a wild beast to a decent man, and a decent man to a Sage!

Let Education not be an inaccessible and untouchable property for any
Let Education not be a pampered child of ‘Wealth, Influence and Money!’
Let Education shave and cut off the weeds and reeds of discrimination
Let Education rise on the brows of the deprived a new Sun of exultation!

Let’s not misuse Education for the mean, selfish and ignominous gains,
Let’s not misuse Education for collapsing the global roots, and wooing banes,
Let’s not misuse Education for the acrimonious air and devastating rains,
Let’s use Education to rub, scrub, clean and cleanse the rigid and ruinous stains!

Let’s use Education for a noble cause of Universal fraternity and harmony,
Let’s use Education as the Panacea to eliminate every prevalent agony,
Let’s use Education to integrate the scattered world to rebuild a new Nation,
Let’s use Education to bless every Soul with a merry and mirthful “Salvation!”

N.B: This poem is dedicated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Since 2008, November 11 has been celebrated as the National Education Day in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of independent India's first education minister – Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

O GOD! LET ME BE BEAUTIFUL IN ITS REAL SENSE!

O GOD! LET ME BE BEAUTIFUL IN ITS REAL SENSE!

Hark! The Real Beauty of a man, with least doubt and ambiguity, lies
Not in his enchanting, entrancing and deceptively extraneous features!
It is, indeed, latent in his fair conduct, and his noble, undying activities!
Ah! A good quality, not quantity, determines man’s states and statures.

Beauty cannot be captured by buying the costly and perishable cosmetics!
Chaste smiles embellish the face; truthful words are the prettiest lipsticks!
Virtue is deemed and construed as the richest savings by a wise and saintly man
That helps him to sail across the deepest trench of Time as a blessed, safe Swan!

Purity in thoughts and sanctity in actions are the infallible keys to immortality,
Gods and goddesses feel being worshipped by one’s accomplished Duty!
Selfless sacrifice is what proves one’s Naturely and Motherly generosity,
Ah! Pearly passive resistance makes one a unique species of an invaluable rarity!

O God! Let me be Beautiful in its real sense by dogging in the above in an ounce
So as to free the rigid mundane shackles, and to its daunting boundaries bounce,
Lest, time and again, the unbudging Devil of Rebirth should upon me pounce!
Lest the Angel of sweet Salvation should sorely abandon me and renounce!

THE ATTRIBUTES OF A TRUE LEADER

THE ATTRIBUTES OF A TRUE LEADER

A leader, as a costly gem, should retain an inherent worth,
He should have the ability to ameliorate the public mirth.
Unlike the blood sucking leeches, like a kind and bounteous Tree,
With no personal profits , he should have an inclination to serve free!

A leader should be able to burn to illuminate, like a self-sacrificing candle,
He should treat friends and foes alike; goats and lions peacefully handle!
He should, like the green and boon granting leaves, have an inevitable ability,
To inhale the carbon-dioxide of adversity, and exhale oxygen generosity!

A leader should be an engine of a Nation’s all round, steady progress,
To sail smoothly the speed-ship of a country thru the troubled water.
He should have a cane’s flexibilty, rock’s firmness, a visionary’s prowess
In a nutshell, to all the needs of the common masses, he should, cater!

Should all the leaders of the world uphold the above said attributes,
Should they live for others only as the Mother Earth abundantly contributes;
The globe will suffer no more, peace will be prevalent and pangs will dissolve,
The reign of Lord Ram will return; around all beings, an endless bliss will revolve!

MAY MY LOVE……..!

MAY MY LOVE……..!

Go, my distant and delicate Star; move across the spacious world,
Being seated on the diamond embedded throne of my heart!
You can feel every instant, every throb of my pure Love emerald,
We are ever together, so what we are always two Poles apart?

Yes, with my Love you can scale all the stiff, unreachable mountains,
You can swim in the inaccessible, joyous and heavenly fountains,
You can shine sweetly in the firmament of life as the sprightly sprites!
May my Love suck all your sorrows; pour on you blithe delights!

May my Love bring you the brightest sunlights during your darkest nights,
May my Love invigorate you to conquer, with ease, all the bitterest fights!
May my Love fetch you the warmest breaths in your coldest existence,
May my Love revive your dying zeal, adding to your life much essence!

May my Love leap and flow, in your life, as a perennial, sparkling Stream,
May my Love care, caress, nurture and accomplish your life’s every dream!
