MERCY

MERCY

One of the rarest blossoms of the Heaven
Born to bless and bestow with Its enviably attributes golden.
More fortunate is Its beneficiary relished, rejoiced and content.
Ah! Most uncommon is Its benefactor, indeed a sublime Saint!

It’s more wonderous than the Seven Wonders mundane.
Its soothing, relieving and liberating nature is past comparison.
In the pitch dark, It shines sprightly as the kind, radiant Sun.
Ah! It knows never to sadden, resolved ever to gleefully gladden.

A spontaneous, unrestrained, pacifying downward-Cascade It is
Resolute and undeterred to relax the receiver and endlessly please.
If ever Its Perennial, Panacean, calm current does unavoidably cease
Alas! Hails a hell of tumultuous tempest, instead of a blissful breeze!

There is none, who is never in Its charismatic, magnanimous needs.
Whether the Monarchs or the negligible minnows seek Its Merciful deeds.
A Will-field is the most congenial ground for It to sprout and grow Its seeds,
Cheapest but costliest are Its rare, exceptional and extraordinary breeds!

It is the much sought after water for a parch, thirsty throat
It is the delicious dish for a burning and revolting stomach
It is the animated rain for an arid, dull, dreary and bleak desert
It is the joy-light for the wretched, crippled and sombre dark!

Yes, It is more beautiful when showered and spiced with Love
Let It be reared and fostered abundantly like a mangrove.
God is truly adorned and satisfied by Its selfless devotee.
Let’s all embellish ourselves with this rare, never-fading Beauty.

N.B This poem is inspired by Shakespeare’s master-piece poem “The Quality of Mercy”, explained by Portia in Act IV,  Scene -1, as a disguised lawyer to impress upon Shylock, who rigidly demands a pound of flesh of Antonio on his failure to pay back the due of 3000 ducats, that he borrowed from him to help his best friend, Bassanio.

I respect Shakespeare beyond words, but at the same time, I, as an individual, cannot welcome all his philosophies in some cases. The readers of ‘AS You Like It’ may endorse it because while teaching, I have been compelled to skip many embarrassingly uncultured and adult dialogues, hard to be open in the Indian culture. It is my personal view.
